Grizzlies Welcome New Talent
In this year’s NBA Draft, the Memphis Grizzlies selected Canadian-Chinese center Zach Edey with the 9th overall pick. The team held an introductory press conference for Edey and two other second-round picks, where Edey expressed his excitement about joining the Grizzlies and praised star point guard Ja Morant.
Edey’s Impressive College Stats
Standing at 7’4″ (224 cm), Edey had a stellar final year at Purdue University, averaging 25.2 points, 12.2 rebounds, 2.2 blocks, and 2 assists per game. While his slower foot speed may pose challenges in adapting to the NBA, his dominance in the paint was a key factor in the Grizzlies’ decision to draft him.
Surprised but Thrilled
During the press conference, Edey shared his anticipation for playing with the Grizzlies. He mentioned that the team had been following him since his sophomore season, but he hadn’t received any communication from them leading up to the draft. “They played very well and were a team I was interested in. This year, I was a bit disappointed because I hadn’t heard from them until draft day. Being selected was surprising, but there’s nothing more exciting,” Edey said.
Partnering with Morant
Edey is particularly enthusiastic about teaming up with Ja Morant. “Playing alongside Morant is exciting. He’s the best guard in the league. He can handle pressure on the offensive end and do everything he does, which will make my job on the court easier,” Edey stated.
Olympic Prospects
Edey has been included in the Canadian basketball team’s 20-man roster for the Paris Olympics. However, he emphasized that his final decision on participation would be made after consulting with the Grizzlies’ organization.
Coach Jenkins’ Endorsement
Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins expressed his optimism about Edey’s potential. “As a player and a person, he has many qualities that we love. Given his successful college career, we will continuously push and challenge him to help him adapt to the NBA,” Jenkins said. (Pesowin)
